This play dough bug activity is a perfect for summertime. It gets the kids outside to collect sticks, rocks, grass, leaves, and whatever else they can think of. This kept my 18 month old up to my 5 year old entertained for a long time. It was fun to watch how each of my kids played differently and created their own unique bug homes using the items they collected.
- homemade playdough (recipe below)
- sticks
- rocks

Playdough Recipe
This recipe is super easy and doesn’t require you to heat it up. It is surprisingly soft and we don’t even dye it a color so it looks more natural for this activity.
Ingredients::
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 tbsp. cream of tartar
- 2 tbsp. oil
- food coloring (optional)
- 2 cups of boiling water
Directions::
- In a large bowl combine flour, salt, cream of tartar.
- Make a well in the center and add oil and food coloring (if using).
- Pour 2 cups of boiling water and mix until well combined.
- Let sit for a few minutes to cool before handling.
- Knead dough to combine.
Travel Bug Playdough Activity
This is super easy to do and it makes an amazing and inexpensive gift. I actually made a few for our trip to NH recently so we had something to do in case it rained outside. Depending on how neat/messy your child is, you could even give it to them during a road trip.
Instructions::
- get a container with a lid and fill the bottom with a ball of play dough.
- add a few sticks and grass/leaves.
- top with a few bugs.
